Cycle to cycle variation

Ideally, combustion in every cylinder of an SI engine would be exactly the same; therefore there would be no cycle-to-cycle variation. However, this is not what happens in reality. Cyclic variation is undesirable since it reduces overall efficiency, increases emissions and noise. The exact cause of cyclic variation is not known. However, it is probably due to a combination of factors.

  • Variation in turbulence/charge motions (Specially close to spark plug)
  • Variation in charge composition
  • Variation in the amount of charge in cylinder

Cyclic variation in pressure due to variation in combustion in a single cylinder (SI) engine.
