CI (Compression Ignition) IC Engine Exhaust Emissions

Please read the previous post on IC Engine Emissions

CI diesel engines almost always run lean (typically AFR > 21) and therefore the levels of gaseous pollutants expected are lower compared to an SI engine. However, since the mixture within the cylinder is heterogeneous, local mixture strengths ranging from excessively rich to excessively weak will occur depending on the fuel injection and air flow characteristics. The pollutant formation mechanisms are similar when based on the local AFR to those for the SI engine. However, the presence of very rich mixtures in the fuel spray produces soot.
