Lean – Deming’s 7 diseases

  1. Emphasis on short term profits undermines quality and productivity.
  2. Evaluation by performance, merit ratings, or by an annual review of performance. These are devastating, as teamwork is destroyed, rivalry is nurtured, performance ratings build fear, and leave people bitter despondent and beaten.
  3. Mobility of management, job hopping managers cannot embrace long term goals and cannot implement the changes required if they are hopping from company to company.
  4. Lack of constancy of purpose, breeds insecurity.
  5. Running a company on visible figures alone. The most important figures are unknown and unknowable, like the value of a happy customer.
  6. Excessive medical costs. Unique to America.
  7. Excessive costs of warranty. Unique to America. The unusually high cost of litigation, law suits and liability issues however resolved. This is a real barrier to growth and development.
