What is a Torque Converter?
In brief, a torque converter does the function of a clutch in an automatic transmission. Engine and gearbox are not mechanically connected. When the engine spins it pumps a fluid which then moves the transmission. At very low engine speeds the flow is so small that the gearbox does not turn. When the engine speed increases the flow also increases and the torque is transmitted to the gearbox. This is a bit old technology. And somehow a bit inefficient.
Making them better.
In the next video you can see the improvements the company ZF has made to the torque converters. It is really interesting. They managed to increase the efficiency, increase the engine rpm range of usage, reduce noise and vibrations…
